's making news as we head into a new week. some surprising strength in america's economy. the unemployment rate fell to a five-year low to 7%. data for the previous months were revised higher. all of that sent stocks up early after a five-day losing streak for the dow and the s&p 500. the news sent interest rates on the tenure treasury higher. the second reading of the gross domestic product as well. the gdp growing at a whooping 3.6%. new home sales surged in october. up 25%. that was the sharpest increase in over three decades. analysts expect sharp reviegss downward. auto sales were high as well. rising at the best pace in six month pps gm rose 13%. chrysler 16% and toyota 10%. all of those numbers were better than expected. >>> due to the strong jobs report an the gdp numbers means we picked up enough speed and what does it mean for the fed tapering its buying program. joining us is greg mankiw. he's an economic's professor at harvard. it's great to see you today. >> it's nice to be with you. >> what do you think? we with seeing this long awaited recovery? >> we've gotten good news. th

rate dropping to the lowest rate in five years, 7% is an encouraging sign for the economy. kristen welker shows us washington's dysfunction could threaten the recovery. >> reporter: launched an eyeglass company three years ago. these days, signs the economy is recovering. >> more than doubled in sales. next year, we are planning to hire 150 people. >> reporter: that hiring trend reflects what is happening throughout the country with news that employers added $200,000 jobs for the last months. 40,000 in education and health care. 27,000 manufacturing jobs, 17,000 construction jobs. >> now, we are getting consistent jobs reports. it's positive. it's positive for the economy and people should feel generally better that conditions are improving. >> reporter: on closer look, the unemployment rate for adult men is 6.7%. for women, 6.2%. the numbers are higher for african-americans and teenagers. still, some worry washington's upcoming budget battles could threaten the recovery. >> the u.s. economy pays attention to what washington is doing but this is an unpredictable business. it makes

big story in the news the u.s. economy and jobs. positive news that more than 200,000 jobs were added in november. and the unemployment rate has fallen from 7.3% to 7%. that is a five-year low, down from a peak of 10% four years ago. wall street liked what it heard. the markets finished up across the board today. nbc's tom costello reports tonight on where the jobs are showing up. >> reporter: 24-year-old eddie christian is one face of an improving economy. after graduating from college and spending nine months searching for a job, he just landed at starwood hotels working in human resources. >> the fact that i have a sense of security o in a full-time job and the fact it's in my field, i feel lucky. >> reporter: employers added more than 200,000 jobs for each of the last four months. in november, many were good-paying jobs. 40,000 in education and health care. 27,000 in manufacturing. 17,000 construction jobs. so they're coming in the right places. they're coming slower than people wanted, but don't forget. we came from a very, very dark place. and so the light is starting to shine.

're face ing this country. a big part of the economy also involves health care. what we don't know yet, despite the president's promises, is not only how the health care industry will respond but what big companies and small companies are doing to see that their best interests are served by all of this, and we can't see how that might play out by the end of his first term. terms of employment. yes, there are encouraging signs that unemployment is going down, but the middle class is still widely separated from the 1% at the top. we know we don't have the skill set in our economy. there is just another report this past week about where america stands when it comes to the rest of the world in terms of educational skills. we have a lot of work to be done. so these are decimal points we're talking about. it's not really dealing with the larger, big picture issue about the american economy. >> katty kay, a final point on this? the president talked about a higher wage hike this week, and it's just not going to happen. it's not going to happen if you look at the current political climate. so a
